Militants Open Fire At Busy Market In Assam’S Kokrajhar, 12 Civilians Dead

GUWAHATI: Gunmen, suspected to be Bodo militants, fired indiscriminately, killing 12 people and injuring over 20 others in Assam’s Kokrajhar on Friday. Later, one of the gunmen was gunned down by the police.

The attack was perpetrated by a gang of five-six gunmen at the Balajan weekly market when it was teeming with shoppers. The militants also triggered some grenade blasts. Several live and empty rounds of an AK-47 rifle were recovered from the site of the incident.

According to eye witnesses, the assailants had come in a car. They said the gunmen were in army fatigues.

“Twelve people have lost their lives and the bodies were in the hospital. Several others were injured but I cannot give the exact number,” Bodoland Territorial Council chief Hagrama Mohilary told Express.

He said the identity of the gunmen was yet to be ascertained but the needle of suspicion points to the Sangbijit faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), which was responsible for the massacre of Adivasis in December 2014.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has condemned the incident. At his instruction, Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma rushed to the incident site.
