OROP suicide: Police move Rahul Gandhi away from Congress protest

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was on Thursday moved away from Jantar Mantar, where he was leading a candlelight vigil for ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal, who had committed suicide.

According to a senior Delhi Police officer, the Congress leader was secured in a police vehicle at the protest venue. 

While maintaining that Mr. Gandhi was not detained nor was he taken to a police station, the officer said, The action, was to ensure his safety as a frenzied mob was behind him. The action was taken in consultation with the SPG which guards Mr. Gandhi, he added.

However, Mr. Gandhi tweeted that he “was detained by Delhi Police and taken away from Jantar Mantar”.

“Police vehicle stopped at 5 Firozeshah Road, en route to Tughlak Road Police Station,” Mr. Gandhi said in another tweet.
