Schools in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur were closed on Monday as the Meteorological (Met) Department predicted heavy rains in the coastal areas due to a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal.

An inference of India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the low-pressure area with an associated cyclonic circulation persists in the southwest Bay of Bengal and it is likely to become more marked.

On Saturday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswamy said that there was no more waterlogging in Chennai and that all was cleared due to the “speedy work of ministers.” Palaniswami also said that for rainwater logging in low line area, former chief minister J Jayalalithaa had released Rs 434 crore for rainwater drainage, adding that “Most of it was finished.”
